Schubert’s Mass in C – a debut

This morning’s Mass at Buckfast Abbey was a celebration marking 60 years since Dom Christopher Delaney’s ordination to the priesthood.

The Abbey Choir sang the Gloria and Agnus Dei from Schubert’s Mass in C (D452), a new addition to our repertoire and therefore a bit of a ‘debut performance’.

It reminded me of my first concert as Musical Director of Wellington Choral Society. The Schubert Mass was part of my own debut, paired with the ever-glorious Requiem by Mozart.

Still a student in those days (at RWCMD in Cardiff), it was the beginning of a relationship with the Wellington choir that’s still going strong in 2017.
